Award Nomination Process
Faculty Excellence in Mentoring Award
The Faculty Excellence in Mentoring Award is presented to three individual Health Sciences faculty members who have demonstrated significant commitment to effective mentorship of junior faculty, residents, fellows, postdoctoral scholars and/or students in academic medicine and health sciences. Awardees are recognized at our annual Health Sciences Mentoring Excellence Celebration and receive $1,000 each to support their mentorship activities.
Nominations must include:
- [Required] Nomination letter (self-nomination or from your department chair, division chief, or senior UC San Diego faculty member) which includes why the nominee merits recognition as an outstanding mentor and a clear description of nominee’s contributions towards the career success of a wide breadth of scholars. In this letter, consider addressing the following points:
- Evidence for the faculty’s commitment to expand their knowledge in mentoring others (e.g., any formal trainings taken).
- The number and breadth of mentees they have mentored throughout their career.
- Evidence of mentee successes, e.g., current position in academia/research.
- The impact of their mentorship within UC San Diego Health Sciences (e.g., developed or led mentorship/training programs).
- [Required] Curriculum vitae highlighting the nominee’s mentoring activities and any mentoring awards previously received.
- [Optional] Supporting letters (1-2 letters; 2-page max each) from previous and/or current mentees, describing the faculty’s experiences with a wide range of mentees from different training levels and backgrounds. Please note that letters beyond the two-letter or two-page limit will be excluded from the nomination packet.
Department/Division Excellence in Mentoring Award
The Department/Division Excellence in Mentoring Award is presented to a Health Sciences department or division for their mentoring excellence demonstrated by providing long-term support for the accomplishments and advancement of UC San Diego Health Sciences faculty. This award signifies the lasting impacts of robust mentorship efforts, such as successful training of effective mentorship, essential career development programs, and a substantial number of FMTP-trained faculty within a department or division. The awardee department or division is recognized at our annual Health Sciences Mentoring Excellence Celebration and receives $2,000 to support its faculty development activities.
Nominations must include:
- [Required] Nomination letter submitted by the Department Chair, Division Chief, or Department Mentor Director(s) (DMDs) detailing the following:
- proportion of total faculty who received formal mentoring training (e.g., FMTP)
- any mentorship training offered other than FMTP-provided training (e.g., retreats)
- mentor pairing approach that is thorough, active and successful
- any career development programming to support success in promotion and advancement of the faculty (e.g., file development)
- any additional mentoring-related program evaluation data (e.g., the climate survey)
- quantitative success metrics on mentoring and career development programming highly encouraged
- [Required] Supporting letters (1-2 letters; 2-page max each) from faculty mentees describing the impact of the mentoring efforts on the individual and/or department/division. Please note that letters beyond the two-letter or two-page limit will be excluded from the nomination packet.
Excellence in Mentoring Awardees will be honored at the 8th Annual Health Sciences Mentoring Excellence Celebration on Wednesday, November 5, 2025 from 5:00 - 7:00 PM at the Ida and Cecil Green Faculty Club, Atkinson Pavilion, and must be able to attend the event. The awardee department/division must be represented by the nominating leader(s).

The Health Sciences Excellence in Mentoring Awards does not consider gender, race, color, national origin or any other protected status as part of the nomination and selection process.
