GWC Application Form

GWC enhances junior faculty NIH grantsmanship through a highly interactive and instructor-led course. Over several months, junior faculty participate in 9 online sessions based on structured, formative assessment using The Grant Application Writer's Workbook (NIH version). Faculty develop a complete draft of an NIH grant proposal that is reviewed in by a mock study section comprised of NIH-funded senior faculty in Health Sciences.

A graphic depicting the evaluation outcomes for the GWC from 2017-2021. There was a 49% increase in respondents' confidence to fund a study, 96% of submitted at least one graphic, and 79% have at least one grant funded. All outcomes are within 2 years post course completion.

GWC is evidence-based and highly successful.  You can read more about the course and its outcomes in our recently published article in Academic Medicine here.

The course is specific to faculty who are actively working on a research proposal for an NIH R-type or K-type grant and we offer two discipline-versions of GWC: 1) Population and Behavioral Health, and 2) Basic and Translational Research.

GWC is supported by UC San Diego Altman Clinical and Translational Research Institute (NIH/NCATS UM1TR005449), UC San Diego FIRST Program (NIH/NCI U54 CA272220), the Chancellor, and Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences.
