Funding for Health Sciences Faculty Leadership Skills Training

Faculty leadership training promotes an engaged, diverse and inclusive faculty in academic medicine. UC San Diego Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences (VCHS) and the Office of Faculty Affairs (OFA) supports funding for faculty development programs at UC San Diego and high quality nationally recognized programs.

Eligibility and Funding Support for Leadership Training Opportunities 

Health Sciences (HS) faculty at all ranks and series with at least a 50% salaried appointment are eligible to apply. Applications for HS funding support are accepted on a rolling basis and must include a description of the applicant's current and potential leadership roles in UC San Diego Health Sciences, CV, and a letter of endorsement from the sponsoring department. Departments are expected to cover a portion of the training (i.e. registration fee) and/or travel expenses, and the endorsement letter must confirm this support. 

Application instructions specific to each opportunity are indicated below. Note that funding is available for one program per faculty in a given 12-month period. A committee comprised of Health Sciences senior faculty leaders will review and select recipients for funding support. 

UC San Diego Leadership Training Opportunities

Leadership training opportunities for Health Sciences faculty at UC San Diego are outlined below with additional information including available funding support. 

UC San Diego Rady School of Management FlexMBA

Target Audience Mid- and Senior-career faculty
Funding spots available Up to 10 faculty members selected annually
Estimated Cost $133,760 (Cost of Tuition for Academic Year 2024-2025)
Support Structure Faculty participant is expected to pay a sixth to a third of the cost. The remainder will be supported by Rady School of Management, the Department, and VCHS.
Time Commitment 2 years (FlexWeekend MBA); 2.5 years (FlexEvening MBA)
Application Due Rolling basis, Rady MBA deadlines are Dec 1, Feb 1, Apr 1, June 1, and July 15. 
Additional requirements Applicants need to apply simultaneously to the Rady MBA program and UCSD HS Faculty Leadership Training Funding Application . Support is contingent upon acceptance into the MBA program. It is recommended that candidates apply for the funding support and to the MBA program by June 1st at the latest.

Support for this training will require that the faculty member remain at UC San Diego for at least 2 years after completion of leadership training or forfeit funding, requiring payback to the institution.

UC San Diego Faculty Leadership Academy

Target Audience ​Full-time Senate faculty (Professor, Professor in Residence, Professor of Clinical X) appointed at Step I and above

UC San Diego Health Leadership Academy

Target Audience ​Current and prospective faculty leaders

Support Structure 1/3 faculty, 1/3 Department and 1/3 Dean, CEO, or VCHS
Time Commitment 1 year (January - December; 23 days of instruction in ten sessions, nominally monthly)

UC San Diego Faculty Career Development Program

Target Audience Assistant Professors with Academic Senate membership (Ladder-Rank, In Residence, LPSOE, and Clinical X series).
  • Applicants must have been employed in one of the above series for at least one year by the application deadline and must be at the rank of Assistant Professor at the time the award is utilized.
Support Structure Applicants may request funding for release from the teaching of 1-2 courses in order to allow time to concentrate their efforts on research or creative activities.
  • AY 2023-2024 course relief rate: $8,500/course for a maximum of $17,000 for two courses.
  • Applicants in Health Sciences may request release time from clinical duties, and the amount of funding will be comparable to that for course relief on the General Campus, up to a maximum of $17,000.
  • The program may also provide support for supplies and equipment, salary for an assistant, summer research, travel expenses related to a project, etc.
Time Commitment Awards are announced in the spring and implemented in the following academic year. Reports on how award funds were used are required for each awardee at the end of the academic year.

National Leadership Training Opportunities

Health Sciences funding is also available for select, high-quality national leadership training opportunities external to UC San Diego. Those opportunities are outlined below with additional information including available funding support. Department support for all travel expenses is required for the applicant to be eligible for Health Sciences funding. Interested faculty should apply for the funding support at least one month prior to attending the desired leadership training program.​

Please note: The Health Sciences funding support is provided in the form of partial or full registration fee reimbursement in most cases, and the reimbursement is processed after the faculty has attended the leadership training program. Funding will provide registration fee reimbursement of up to $3,000
  • ​​If the registration fee exceeds $3,000, the reimbursement will be offered for one third of the registration fee, with a maximum cap at $5,000. 
  • Please note that in all instances, the amount of support provided may vary depending on availability of funds
Other high-quality leadership trainings not listed may be considered for funding. Please send your request to hsfacaffairs@ucsd.edu.

AAMC Leadership Development Seminars

Target Audience ​Early and mid-career women and under-represented minority faculty
Estimated Cost ​$2,275 - $2,375 registration fee only (not including travel, lodging, and ​meals)
Support Structure HS funding will support registration fees and Department is responsible for travel expenses
Time Commitment 2.5 - 3.5 days at various seminar locations

AAMC Leading Organizations to Health Program

Target Audience ​Mid- and senior-career faculty
Estimated Cost ​$9,975 - $11,175 registration fee only (not including travel, lodging, and meals)
Support Structure HS funding will support partial registration fees and Department is responsible for travel expenses
Time Commitment 6 months (includes two in-person sessions and 10 virtual sessions)

Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM)

Target Audience ​Mid- and senior-career women faculty
Estimated Cost ​$30,000 ($16,400 registration + travel, lodging, meals)
Support Structure
  • ​For SOM Faculty: 1/3 Faculty, 1/3 Department Chair, and 1/3 Dean of SOM (with possible split with CEO if faculty is affiliated with the Health System)
  • For HWSPH and SSPPS Faculty: 1/3 Faculty, 1/3 Department Chair, and 1/3 VCHS split with Dean
Time Commitment 1 year fellowship (including three onsite 1-week sessions)
Application Due Application for the 2024-2025 must be received by December 1, 2023, by 11:59PM Eastern Time (ET). Nominations and recommendations must be received by December 15, 2023 by 11:59PM ET.
Additional requirements As per ELAM​’s instructions, an institution can nominate up to two people who identify as women from each of its professional schools (medicine, public health and pharmacy) and the Health System.

Applicants must be nominated by Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences and first apply to ELAM. After acceptance into ELAM, faculty may submit a UCSD HS Faculty Leadership Training Funding Application

Support for this training will require that the faculty member remain at UC San Diego for at least 2 years after completion of leadership training or forfeit funding, requiring payback to the institution.

Physician Leadership Certificate

Target Audience ​​Early-career clinical faculty
Estimated Cost ​​$6,500 registration only (not including travel, lodging, meals)
Support Structure ​​HS funding will support up to $2,500 of the registration fees, and Department is responsible for the remaining registration fee, as well as travel expenses, if any.
Time Commitment ​February 2024 - June 2024 (approximately 45-60 hours in synchronous and asynchronous activities)
