Why Apply
Gain an advantage on your faculty career in cardiovascular sciences with mentorship from world renowned researchers and hands-on training on grant writing skills.
Early career junior faculty and postdoctoral scholars transitioning to a faculty position whose cardiovascular research expertise aligns with our research mentors will maximally benefit from this program.
Grant Writing Course
One of the highlights of the program, starting remotely prior to and during Summer Institute I, is its Grant Writing Course. Participants will develop skills in writing effective grant proposals through instruction, as well as peer and instructor feedback. The grant application will be reviewed in a mock study section at the Mid-year Meeting, and again at the second Summer Institute.
Research and Career Mentoring
Participants will be matched with UC San Diego faculty, a research faculty mentor and a career faculty mentor, in addition to a mentor of their choice from their home institution. The mentoring relationship continues throughout program participation. The career mentor will review the mentee's Faculty Research and Career Advancement Plan (RCAP) developed during the Summer Institute to help guide the mentee through short- and long-term research and career goals.
Evidence-Based Professional Development Programming
Participants will learn how to navigate pathways for academic advancement, as well as submission and review of both journal articles and grants. They will also improve their knowledge and skills in specific professional development areas important for research and career success, such as personnel, conflict, and time management.
