Grant Writing Course
One of the highlights of the program, starting with Summer Institute I, is its Grant Writing Course. Participants will
- Develop skills in writing effective grant proposals and manuscripts through instruction and peer and instructor feedback.
- Develop a research plan with the goal of using seed funds from the Small Research Project (SRP) pilot programs to accelerate the course towards successful production and submission of an NIH or equivalent grant.
Research and Career Mentoring
Participants will be matched with UC San Diego faculty, a research faculty mentor and a career underrepresented faculty mentor, in addition to a mentor of their choice from their home institution. The mentoring relationship continues beyond the initial Summer Institute via conference calls and face-to-face meetings in Winter and during the second Summer Institute.
- Participants will have the opportunity to compete for a Small Research Project (SRP) pilot grant.
- The research mentor will provide guidance and feedback on the science and strategies to develop the SRP plans.
- The career mentor will review your Faculty Research and Career Advancement Plan (RCAP) that you develop during the Summer Institute to help guide you through short- and long-term research and career goals.
Evidence-Based Professional Development Programming
- Learn how to navigate pathways for academic advancement, as well as submission and review of both journal articles and grants.
- Improve your knowledge and skills in specific professional development areas important for research and career success, such as personnel, conflict, and time management.
- Training on biostatistics concepts and methods to help boost your competency as an independent researcher.
